Following is an instant message conversation that took place on March 31 between my webmaster and stepson Joey and Meg, his 6-year-old niece (my stepgrandaughter). Meg is in kindergarten and learning to read and write. “Sam or Missy” refers to Meg’s parents.

I was trying to figure out why she chose the period button instead of the spacebar, then I realized that if you’re new to the concept of typing, the big blank key at the bottom of the keyboard doesn’t exactly scream “this is how you create empty spaces between words.” To the untrained eye, it’s just a big empty button. Good job Meg, for inventing your own solution!

So adorable. I have a six-year-old granddaughter. Last Saturday, she was expecting my husband and I to come get her to spend the weekend. My husband called her about 10:30 a.m. and told her that I was in a meeting and that we would be there in about two hours. She said, “I can wait one hour, but I JUST CAN’T WAIT TWO!” So intent. So matter-of-fact. So precious. In the future, the Saturday meetings can wait.
