Just got an e-mail from a relative noting some great gossip from her friend’s Mormon ward: A 56-year-old member just announced her engagement to a 21-year-old male (he’s a friend of her youngest son).
I’m 18 years younger than my hubby.
But this?
What say y’all?

Is she hot?

I’m sorry, that was wrong. I apologize.
so … is she hot?

This happens all the time in West African matriarchal societies. Hope a nice dowry is included.

Come to think of it, the 56-year-old is gonna need a convertible for her boy-toy to drive. A red SL550 will do very nicely.

I’ve heard of May-September romances, but this seems more like February-November.
June 27th, 2007 at 5:59 pm
I feel very sexist for saying this…but EWWWWWWWW! Of course, I might say that the other way. 35 years is a lot.
Interestingly, I went to junior high in Idaho with the first lady of that great state now, Lori Otter. Her husband is older than my dad. They got married a year ago. I said EWWWWWW!

It won’t last. I mean, even if they stay together it won’t last. She ain’t got that much time left. Yeah, I think it’s gross.

msteele,
Maybe early February-December 31st ?
Check out `Harold and Maude` ( 1972 ). Bud Cort ( 20 ) and Ruth Gordon ( 79 ). A cult classic. Music by Cat Stevens and directed by Hal Ashby.
Anything is possible.
June 27th, 2007 at 8:07 pm
I admit I have seen Harold and Maude…maybe in the late 70’s on HBO. I was 6 when it came out, maybe 12 when I saw it. And I still went EWWWW. :)

I knew a couple when I lived in Rhode Island who were madly in love. The age difference was the same. The man was 30 years younger. Many people ridiculed them and criticized them for marrying. That was over 30 years ago and they are still married and madly in love. If this were an older man and a younger woman would all of you still say ewww? I say good luck to them.

Good one, chardonnay. I’d forgot the laughs I got from H&M all those years ago. I was 18, but LMAO.
It wouldn’t work for me, my 2nd wife is only 2 years older than me, but whatever floats their boat. As long as I don’t have to watch, whatever floats your boat if everyone’s adults, though we are close here.

Redtazz, that was my point, it doesn’t matter to me who is older or younger by sex. I am a female…and I still say EWWWWW. Steely Dan had that great song called “Hey Nineteen”…which is more a metaphor than a rule about how young the person is you are with…but it makes sense.
I think it depends on the couple. Gloria Vanderbilt was 21 and Leopold Stokowski was 63 when they met (I am 40, does anyone else know who these people ARE?) It was great but it didn’t last.

Pictures Holly, we need pictures. Without them we are just stabbing in the dark. I’ll leave with this poem by a famous riter:
My ex- boyfriend
I met this guy
i told him a lie
i love him so
i’m such a hoe
he’s really a she
it must be me

My aunt married a man 25 years her junior and they were married for 40 years. She just died at the age of 95 and he is still living. Were they happy? Don’t know, don’t care because it’s NOT MY DAMN BUSINESS!
I am 13 years older than my wife and it has worked fine. We just celebrated our 35 wedding anniversary June 10th.
I like Satchel Paige’s quote: “How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you was?”

Thoughts:
I loved Harold and Maude. I did the cult thing of watching it five or six times (at least) in my 20s. I should watch it again.
Steely Dan’s “Hey Nineteen” has become a theme song of my marriage to Ted! We spend some real quality time explaining to each other the pivotal moments of our youth and generations. I’m also trying to win him over to hip hop and rap music but it’s not working.
It’s a standing joke in my family and Ted’s what a pop culture square he is. If I showed him photos of Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears, he’d have no idea how to separate them. (That’s actually a challenge for a lot of us, I’d guess.)
My teenage kids bought Ted the Trivial Pursuit “Pop Culture” version a couple of Xmases ago to give him a little leg up in that department. It remains a struggle!
But I tell you, we’re having the time of our lives.

The feminist in me is trying not to say “ewww!” because I don’t think there should be a double standard.
That said, I’m a 37 year old female who would probably say eww! if a 21 year old male hit on me (not likely, but let just say) because who wants to deal with all that male-in-his-20s stuff again? I could deal with it when I was in my 20s, but not now. Not much better than the teenage angst. Yuck.
As I got into my mid 30s I started to find that most men in their 40s and 50s are much sexier than they were in their 20s - at least the ones that I know of, which is probably not a large number. They tend to be more mature, less shallow, less self-absorbed. I also find the lines around the eyes in this age group to be very attractive.
My husband is 5 years older, so we only have a few areas where we have trouble enjoying each others pop culture coming of age.

One of the Gabor sisters, I think it was Zha Zha, said it best “Age is only a number dahlin”.
June 28th, 2007 at 1:30 pm
greenjenni,
I’m a man in my 50’s, and I totally agree with you that I’m sexier now than I was in my 20’s. The only problem is that my wife needs to periodically remind me, because I keep forgetting what that means…

This has been one of the most entertaining blog subjects. All these months I’ve been trying to figure out by your comments whether you are male/female, married/single, and your approximate ages. You’ve revealed all of that, and more. Your political views are obvious.:)WOW this has been interesting. Thanks, Holly!
P.S. Some of us over 50 are still HOT! HOT! HOT!

I say go for it granny! Older man, younger woman, no one thinks twice about it because it happens all the time. Older woman (Demi Moore) younger man (Ashton Kutcher) and all the naysayers come out from under their rocks.
Where ever you find love grab it and hold on tight. Give them your blessings and move along.

I am pleased to see that people on this blog are consciously aware of the double standard in reaction to this. It gives me hope that the we are progressing as a society towards true equality.
I find myself agreeing with larryomiller–it’s just not any of our business. I think we all have the inherit right to pursue happiness. If they’re happy, more power to them. What does their relationship have to do with me or vice versa? I think government and third-parties need to get out of people’s individual relationships.
I say love is a beautiful thing to come across in this world and when you find it, you should hold on to it and treasure it for as long as it lasts.

My paternal grandmother married a man who had a daughter her age. Their only child was my dad. My grandfather passed when my dad was a boy of five and my grandmother was in her early thirties. My grandmother lived to be eight-six and spoke lovely of him her entire life. He never left her heart.

Fellow Mullentownites - If you read this week’s City Weekly, you saw that Holly called us out. I for one was proud, though I was not quoted, I believe that was twowheelfish. :)
Holly, I hope the Weekly’s blog is this much fun.

Forget the age double standard…..It wouldn’t be such a big deal if it was an older man and a younger woman. On the same note, have you noticed all the commercials that push non-aging products to women, but not to men? Was having a discussion with my son about that yesterday. Older men are distinguished, older women have to color their hair and use botox and save for face lifts!

Some hot Paris Hilton sex tape pics…
Shouldn’t Paris Hilton have gone to jail because of her sex tape videos rather than because of not paying ticket charges?…
