It’s getting crazy as all getout in this town, leading up to the big Rocky Anderson/Sean Hannity debate tomorrow night at the University of Utah. Smart U. students, who got tickets for $5 a pop, are selling them on eBay for more than $75 a piece. Now that’s free enterprise.
Anyway, at City Weekly we have this thing in perspective. Resident funny man Bill Frost has made it easy for people intent on keeping score between our mayor for life and Hannity the showman. If you missed Bill’s take on the frenzy, check it out here.
Speaking of promoting my newspaper, I’m regularly pimping each week’s issue on FOX-13 here in Salt Lake City. For the next nine weeks, I’m on live with “Good Day Utah” anchors Kerri Cronk and Dan Evans each Thursday at approximately 8:50 a.m. We talk, we laugh, we act vapid just like the best morning show people do everywhere. I’ve got my money down on Rocky. I’m not sure how a schmuck like Hannity will do outside of the friendly confines of the studios at Fox News.

I’ve got my money (figure of speech, though) on Rocky as well. I just wish that the Q & A were longer, so that the trashing could just go on and on.

I have two words. GO ROCKY.
Unfortunately, it “ain’t” (so. Idaho and I think native Utah talk) going to do a darned bit of good or change anyone’s minds. I sure hope Rocky is articluate and doesn’t give Mr. “I hate independent thought” a hole to poke at though.
What did happen to real debate in this country? It seems to have died a long time ago, if it ever existed….

I think you’re all right. I’d like someone competent to engage the Mayor in a real discussion, but I think Hannity relies too much on his ability to cut off or override callers.

Too bad no one asked Hannity if he did not believe in evolution like they did the repub candidates for prez the other nite (three raised their hands that they did not) otherwise we could have gotten a more solid grounding of Hannity’s intellect (of lack thereof).

Anyone else see it? I listened in, and I thought Anderson in his initial presentation was much more detailed and meaty than Hannity. Sean went for emotion with limited substance and lots of emotion, Rocky generally kept calm and factual, except for when he compared Pres. Bush to the Nazi war criminals tried at Nuremburg. But the candidate and audience Q&A’s were fluff and posturing, leaving me with a ‘pox on both your houses’ feeling. And the audience seemed overly boisterous, showing college liberals’ typical antipathy toward free speech (though Hannity seemed to enjoy playing to that).

I didn’t see it but everything that I’ve heard about it is consistent with your observations.
However, were you sure it was just the college liberals who were antipathetic towards free speech? Something tells me that the Hannity supporters were just, if not more boisterous than the alleged “college liberals.”
Actually, college liberals tend to be sedate-to-the-point-of-being-comatose-NPR-listen’ weenines. The few testosterone juiced 21 year-olds you see on TV are unrepresentative of the general population of timorous pansies from which liberals tend to be spawned. I personally am too much of a coward to attend those sorts of things.

Here in San Francisco we have many liberal political groups, my favorite is the Lavender Left. Platitudinous ? yes, effete ? yes….but weenies ? no.

I could be wrong about who was more boisterous, since I was just listening on the radio, but it seemed to me that although both ‘debaters’ had heckling going on, the voices were louder and the interruptions more frequent during Hannity’s speech.
And chardonnay, so is that where the phrase ‘two left effete’ comes from? ;-)

With a name like “Lavender Left,” you’d have to have balls (metaphorically, anyway. I imagine many of the members actually have had them surgically removed).

San Francisco is very diverse and exhibitionist..don`t like the Lavenders ? We also have the Harvey Milk dems and the “Commie Queers” (no,I`m not making this up). Maybe wouldn`t play well in Logan.
