I was in Portland the same weekend. However, when I saw it, the Burnside Bridge was closed to all traffic, including pedestrians and runners, due to construction. How did you run across it?

Love Portland, except for the rain. Wish more could be done to have SLC have some of the same feel and less "chain" restaurants - well, at least southern SL county where I am.

Go to Bridgeport Brewing - they have AWESOME pizza and wonderful beer - and root beer.

Holly,

It's fun to think of you exploring the city. It IS an opintionated place, liberal, for the most part. It has had a steady population of teen runaways over the years but far fewer homeless than say, Seattle and a reputation as champions of gays and the environment. I agree that Utah has it's own beauty... it's an "apples and oranges" comparison. I've been impressed with the efforts Salt Lake is making to "go green."

Have to visited Powell's bookstore at 1005 W Burnside? It's a one of a kind experience. As to the suburbs....of course you're right about the chain restaurants and car lots but the older sections of some of the outlying areas are still intact and charming.

Be sure and visit the Hotel Benson..one of the West`s Grand Dame hotels, like the Brown Palace in Denver or what was the Hotel Utah ( now the J.Smith memorial or some such..with a 9 ft. statue of same in the lobby ). The Benson`s London Grill is excellent with a great wine list.

Cheers
